SWIFTS SECURE NORTH HANTS TITLE

Paul Harris • Feb 07, 2022

Andover New Street Swifts (pictured) wrapped-up the Division One North Hants title with a game to spare, by virtue of a 4-0 home victory against Silchester Village, as rivals Headley United lost 2-1 at neighbours, Whitehill & Bordon.

It was also Hampshire Saturday Trophy time again, with an HPFL side in each quarter-final. There were some tough ties for our teams, and the results bore this out.

Two trips to the Island led to defeats for Fleetlands (4-6 at holders Brading Town) and Stockbridge (0-3 at Shanklin). Hook also lost 0-5 at AFC Stoneham Res, who are proving to be very strong in this competition. However, we do have a representative in the last four in Meon Milton, who thumped Hartley Wintney A (Aldershot League) 7-1.

In the Senior Division, the top positions are relatively unchanged. Moneyfields Res didn’t play, and Denmead’s game against Clanfield was unfortunately abandoned due to player injuries – wishing both players concerned a speedy recovery.

Locks Heath lost ground in third place with a 1-1 home draw against improving Winchester Castle. Hayling United consolidated their sixth position with a 2-1 win at Liphook, and Paulsgrove were 3-0 home winners over Liss Athletic.

At the bottom, Lyndhurst's hopes of recording their first points of the season were dashed at home to Chamberlayne Athletic, who secured their first Senior Division victory since October, by a solitary goal to nil.

In Division One South East, the top two met at The Hive and it was a first defeat of the season for leaders QK Southampton who lost 1-2 at home to Upham. The teams are level on points, but QK have a game in hand and a better goal difference.

Harvest kept on their heels in third, with a big 6-0 away win at Michelmersh and Timsbury. Whiteley Wanderers are fourth, with games in hand, after an even bigger 11-0 win at Clarendon. AFC Netley played third-bottom Broughton, but are still yet to record their first point after a 0-2 home defeat.

Meanwhile, in the League Cup, Colden Common had a 3-1 home victory over Sway in their quarter-final, and will meet Meon Milton or Headley United in the last four at Fareham Town on March 9.
