DENMEAD SLIP ON FINAL DAY

Paul Harris • Apr 03, 2022

On Wednesday, the second League Cup semi-final was played at Fareham, an eagerly-awaited clash between two teams in the top five of the Senior Division, and it didn’t disappoint.

Locks Heath raced into a 3-0 lead just after the half hour mark, but Moneyfields Res had pulled two of those back by half time. Locks extended their lead after the restart, but Moneys scored again with 14 minutes to go to make it a nervy finish.

On Saturday, the battle at the top of the Senior Division took yet another twist.

HAMPSHIRE PREMIER LEAGUE - TABLES

Leaders Denmead played their last game of the season against sixth-placed Stockbridge, and were beaten 1-5 at Front Lawn. Second-placed Moneyfields Res beat Winchester Castle 3-0 in a home game played at Petersfield School, and are now only four points behind with three games still to play, with a better goal difference.

The only other club still in the hunt are Colden Common, who won a tricky game 2-1 at Liphook United (pictured), and are still nine points behind Moneys, but have three games in hand on them.

Third and fourth-placed Fleetlands and Locks Heath didn’t play, so the teams behind them caught up – we now have a three-way tie for fourth place as Locks are joined by Common and Stockbridge.

Below them, Paulsgrove move into seventh after a 2-2 home draw with Sway, thanks to Hayling United’s 1-4 home defeat by Liss Athletic, who, by virtue of that win, move out of the bottom three. At the bottom, Lyndhurst picked up their fourth point of the season thanks to a 2-2 draw at home to Clanfield.

There were a couple of games in Division 1 South East, where Meon Milton, still with six games to play, won 1-0 at Broughton. They are still seventh, but have a fair chance of fifth, and an outside chance of fourth if they win their games and other results go their way. Whiteley Wanderers have also ,not yet completed their games yet, and they won 6-2 at AFC Netley to consolidate their fourth spot.

The L4 Challenge Cup saw the two-legged quarter finals get under way, with two first leg games completed – the teams that finished second in the two Division 1 tables faced each other, with Harvest winning 3-2 at Whitehill and Bordon. In the other game Upham won 4-2 at Clarendon.
