QK SOTON CLINCH SE TITLE

Paul Harris • Mar 06, 2022

It’s congratulations to QK Southampton (pictured) who beat the only team who could have overtaken them - Whiteley Wanderers - 4-0 at The Hive, to claim the Division One South East title.

Two of the goals coming from sub Harley Daish, the others from Leon Longhurst and John Nwoba. Harvest are looking favourites for second place now as they hit double figures for at home for the third time this season (they had a nine, too!) – 12-0 against Broughton this time.

Our sole remaining representative in the Hampshire Saturday Trophy exited at the semi-final stage, Meon Milton losing 0-2 at home to good IOW opposition in Shanklin. Well done to Meon on reaching this stage in their debut season in the HPFL, and they still have more Cup action to come!

In the Senior Division, three games postponed, including the one involving leaders Moneyfields Reserves, so Denmead’s 1-1 draw at Paulsgrove saw them move a point clear at the top, although Moneys have three games in hand. Colden Common, also with games in hand, move menacingly into fifth after a good 2-0 win at Winchester Castle.

At the bottom, Liss Athletic’s 1-0 home win over Hayling United enables them to move up a couple of places, whereas Chamberlayne Athletic’s 1-5 home defeat to fourth-placed Fleetlands sees them sink into the bottom two.

In Division One North, just the one game again, with Headley United’s 2-0 home win over Hook moving then back into second place.

Our man at Hook said: ‘A strong, disruptive wind and a bobbly surface prevented either team from playing decent football. A more robust approach by the home team allowed them to create more chances during the game.

They took the lead through on 24 minutes when Hook failed to clear the ball and Aaron Cresswell hooked the ball over Stu Clark in the Hook goal from eight yards.

Hook’s centre half pairing of Dan Mellors and Stan Currie thwarted many Headley raids. But it was Currie’s handball on 65 minutes that led to a penalty. Despite Clark diving the right, Matt Brown’s spot kick had more than enough pace, 2-0. Gillingham in the home goal had very few shots to save which highlighted Hook’s lack of thrust up front.’.

The first game of the L4 Challenge Cup, for Division One teams, was also played this weekend. North Waltham beat Michelmersh and Timsbury 7-1, including two for Colby Craig.
